Indications
A liver-stomach disharmony complicated by marked phlegm and an element of depressive heat possibly manifesting as chronic gastritis, gastro-esophageal reflux disorder, peptic ulcer, chronic hepatitis, neurosis, nightmares and terrors, anxiety disorders, the early stages of schizophrenia, Ménière=s disease, and chronic bronchitis

 

Signs & symptoms of liver depression include:
Irritability
Sighing
Chest oppression
Rib-side distention and pain
A bowstring pulse

 

Signs & symptoms of stomach loss of harmony
Hiccup, burping, belching, ercutation

 

Signs & symptoms of phlegm include:
Plum pit qi (i.e., the sensation of soemthing stuck in the back of the throat which can neither be coughed up nor swallowed down
Possible slimy tongue fur
Possible slippery pulse

 

Signs & symptoms of depressive heat include:
A bitter and/or sour taste in the mouth
Acid eructations
A burning, hot feeling in the epigastrium
Yellow tongue fur
Possible rapid pulse

 

Formula explanation
Within this formula, Zhu Ru harmonizes the liver and stomach and clears depressive heat. Zhi Shi courses the liver and rectifies the qi. It also helps transform phlegm and strongly descends the qi. Ban Xia, Fu Ling, and Chen Pi eliminate dampness and transform phlegm while also descending the qi and downbearing counterflow. Fu Ling along with Da Zao and Gan Cao nourish and construct the heart spirit and thus quiet the spirit. Da Zao and Gan Cao can also be said to harmonize all the other ingredients in the formula as well as harmonize the middle.
